WHICH SAND DO I NEED?
Sand types are not interchangeable. This is the most common mix-up we get called about.
PAVERS, CONCRETE & BACKFILL
Manufactured sand. Coarser and angular, so it locks in place: the bedding layer under pavers and flagstone, granular backfill around pipe and foundations, and mixing concrete.
RAISING GROUND
Fill sand. General-purpose sand for backfilling, raising low spots, and bedding utility trenches where the spec just says sand.

MANUFACTURED SAND (GRANULAR BACKFILL)
Crushed from rock rather than dredged from a river, so the grains are sharp and angular. It compacts tight and stays put, which is exactly what you want under things.
Use it for: bedding under pavers and flagstone, granular backfill around foundations and pipe, mixing concrete, utility work.

MASONRY SAND
Fine, washed, and uniform. Soft enough for bare feet, clean enough for mortar. If a kid or a pool liner will touch it, this is the sand.
Use it for: mortar for brick and block, sandboxes and playgrounds, pool bases, volleyball courts, beach areas.

FILL SAND
General-purpose sand, unwashed and ungraded. It does the quiet work: filling, leveling, and bedding where nothing above it cares what the grains look like.
Use it for: backfilling, raising low ground, bedding pipe and utility trenches.

Is a truckload of sand cheaper than bagged sand?
By a wide margin, per ton. A truckload is 14 to 16 tons of loose sand delivered in one trip. Getting that much sand in bags means hundreds of bags at several dollars each, plus the hauling. If the job needs more than a pickup bed of sand, bulk delivery is the cheaper way.
How much area does a load of sand cover?
A full load is roughly 10 cubic yards, which covers about 800 to 1,000 square feet at 3 inches deep. For a sandbox or play area you likely need far less than a full load; call us and we will figure the right amount. The calculator on this page does the math from your measurements.
