PICKING A ROCK

With decorative rock the look is the product, so read this before you order by name.

Photos are representative, and with natural stone that matters more than anywhere else on this site. River rock color and size vary by source and by batch: one delivery of Rainbow can run browner, the next greyer. If your design depends on an exact color, say so when you order and we will confirm what the yard actually has on the ground that week before you commit. For rock where color is not the point, the working cuts on the gravel & crushed rock page cost roughly half as much per yard.

DRY CREEKS & DRAINAGE WITH LOOKS

Larger 2 to 4 inch river rock lines a dry creek bed that actually carries water. For pure drainage nobody sees, #57 stone does it cheaper.

/ 04

PLAY AREAS

Pea gravel is the traditional playground surface: rounded, no sharp edges. For the soft engineered option, see kiddie cushion mulch.

THE ROCK, IN DETAIL

Decomposed granite, fine tan gravel fines

DECOMPOSED GRANITE

Granite weathered down to gravel fines, in warm tan tones. It compacts into a firm, natural-looking surface that still drains, which is why park paths are made of it.

Use it for: garden paths, patio floors, xeriscape ground cover, bocce and seating areas. Lay it 2 to 3 inches, compacted.

3 yards delivered: $530 · full load (10 yards): $1,300

Oklahoma river rock, Aztec blend, smooth tan and brown stones

OKLAHOMA RIVER ROCK, AZTEC (1" OR 1 1/2")

Smooth river-washed stone in mixed tans and browns, quarried in-state, which is why it is the value river rock. Two sizes: 1 inch reads tidier, 1 1/2 inch stays put better on slopes.

Use it for: flower beds, borders, downspout runs, ground cover that never needs re-mulching.

3 yards delivered, either size: $770 · full load (10 yards): $2,100

Pea gravel, small rounded multicolor stones

PEA GRAVEL

Pea-sized rounded stone, easy underfoot and easy on bare knees, which is why it ends up in playgrounds, dog runs, and between stepping stones.

Use it for: play areas, patios and fire pit surrounds, walkway joints, dog runs.

3 yards delivered: $770 · full load (10 yards): $2,100

Colorado Rainbow river rock, multicolor smooth stones

COLORADO RIVER ROCK, RAINBOW (1 1/2" OR 2-4")

Mountain-washed stone in mixed reds, purples, and greys. The 2 to 4 inch size is the dry-creek rock: big enough to look deliberate and to stay put when the creek actually runs.

Use it for: feature beds, dry creek beds, pond edges, anywhere the rock IS the landscaping.

3 yards delivered, either size: $1,070 · full load (10 yards): $3,100

Mesa Grey river rock, smooth grey stones

COLORADO RIVER ROCK, MESA GREY

Uniform cool grey river stone, the premium pick for modern exteriors where the palette is grey-on-grey and a mixed-color rock would fight the house.

DECORATIVE ROCK QUESTIONS, STRAIGHT ANSWERS

How much does river rock cost delivered in Tulsa?

Delivered in Tulsa County: 3 cubic yards of Oklahoma river rock or pea gravel runs $770 all-in, Colorado Rainbow runs $1,070, and Mesa Grey runs $1,250. Decomposed granite is $530 for 3 yards. Outside Tulsa County adds $50 per load. Prices are estimates plus sales tax, confirmed on your quote. Multi-load job or repeat work? Ask about discounts.

How many yards of rock do my beds need?

Measure length times width in feet, and figure a yard of rock covers about 100 square feet at 3 inches deep. A typical front-bed refresh runs 2 to 4 cubic yards. The calculator on this page does the math from your measurements and prices it delivered.

Why is decorative rock priced by the yard instead of the ton?

Because that is how you plan it: beds are measured in area and depth, which gives cubic yards. It is still rock underneath, about 1.36 tons per yard, and our truck carries around 10 yards in a load, so big orders still count in loads.

Will the rock look exactly like the photos?

No photo is a promise with natural stone. River rock color and size vary by source and batch, so treat the pictures as representative. If the exact color matters to your design, tell us and we will confirm what the yard currently has before you commit to a full delivery.

Do you spread the rock in the beds?

No. We deliver and dump in a pile where you point us, on the driveway or as close to the beds as a loaded truck can safely get. Spreading is a different trade, so have a wheelbarrow plan or a landscaper lined up.
