WHICH ROCK DO I NEED?
Gravel is not one thing. The right cut depends on whether it needs to pack hard, drain water, or hold a slope.
DRAINAGE
You want clean washed rock with no fines so water moves: ASTM #57 for french drains and backfill, Class A clean where spec requires washed gravel.
PADS & ROADS
You want graded base that compacts to near-concrete: ODOT Type A or 3" crusher run down first, finer rock on top.
EROSION & SLOPES
You want rock too big to wash away: rip rap on creek banks and pond dams, gabion for baskets, 6" surge where mud swallows everything smaller.

DRIVEWAY & SURFACE ROCK
Rock with fines in the mix, so it locks together and packs down into a surface you drive on.
1 1/2" CRUSHER RUN, THE DRIVEWAY GRAVEL
Crushed stone up to an inch and a half, with the fines left in. It packs down hard, sheds rain, and is what most people mean when they say driveway gravel. Plenty of people around here call it crush and run or crush-n-run: same rock, same load. If you are not sure what to order for a driveway, order this.
Use it for: driveways, parking areas, farm lanes, building up a washed-out drive. Lay it 3 to 4 inches deep.

3/4" CRUSHER RUN
Same idea as the 1 1/2 inch, crushed finer. Tighter finish underfoot and easier to rake level, which makes it the topping course over a coarser base.
Use it for: the top 2 inches of a driveway, paths, pads that get foot traffic.

WASTE ROCK, THE BUDGET LOAD
Mixed quarry rock, sizes all over the place, and the cheapest thing on this page. Where looks do not matter and mud does, it is a lot of rock for the money.
Use it for: filling washouts and mud holes, farm roads, a first lift under better rock.

Crushed marble in a driveway-friendly size, lighter in color than standard grey crusher run. A clean look at a working-rock price.

BASE, PADS & ROADWORK
Graded aggregate that compacts to a hard, load-bearing layer. What goes under everything else.
3" CRUSHER RUN & 3" MARBLE, ROAD BASE
Big crushed rock down to fines. This is the first lift on a new drive or pad: it bridges soft ground and gives the finer top course something to grip. The marble cut does the same job in a lighter color.
Use it for: new driveways over dirt, building pads, soft or rutted ground, the base layer under 1 1/2" crusher run. Lay it 4 to 6 inches deep.

ODOT TYPE A & TBSC TYPE E BASE
State-spec graded base. When the job says ODOT Type A or Type E, this is that material from an ODOT-approved source, not a close-enough substitute.
Use it for: spec roadwork, commercial pads, anything an engineer signed.

SCREENINGS
The fine leftovers from crushing, rock dust up to about a quarter inch. Compacts nearly flat, which is why it goes under things that have to sit level.
Use it for: leveling under pavers and flagstone, walking paths, topping a rough drive, arena footing.

3/8" CHIP, STANDARD BEDDING
Small uniform chip stone. Utility crews bed pipe in it because it flows around a pipe and protects it; the same trait makes it a comfortable path surface.
Use it for: bedding water and sewer lines, pathways, topdressing a drive.

DRAINAGE & STRUCTURAL ROCK
Clean washed rock and heavy stone. Built to move water or hold ground, not to pack flat.
ASTM #57 STONE
The workhorse clean rock, roughly 3/4 to 1 inch, washed, no fines. Water runs straight through it, which is the whole point.
Use it for: french drains, foundation and retaining-wall backfill, under concrete slabs, septic laterals.

CLASS A CLEAN GRAVEL, 3/4" OR 1 1/2"
Washed, spec-grade clean gravel in two sizes. The pick when the plans call for clean aggregate by class rather than by number.
Use it for: spec drainage work, concrete mix aggregate, exposed finishes.

RIP RAP, 12" TO 36"
Big angular stone, one to three feet across, sized so moving water cannot carry it off. Sold in 12 to 18, 18 to 24, and 24 to 36 inch ranges; tell us the bank and we will spec the size.
Use it for: creek banks, pond dams and spillways, culvert ends, shoreline.

GABION ROCK
Fist-sized angular rock, cut to fill wire gabion baskets, and just as good loose anywhere you need rock bigger than gravel but smaller than rip rap.
Use it for: gabion baskets and walls, ditch lining, decorative borders with weight.

Uniform two-inch angular stone, the same rock that holds track in place. Big enough to stay put, open enough to drain.

Rough crushed rock up to six inches. When ground is so soft it eats normal gravel, surge goes down first and gives everything above it a skeleton.

Is crush and run the same as crusher run?
Same rock, different name. Crush and run, crush-n-run, and crusher run all mean crushed stone with the fines left in, which is what packs down into a hard driveway surface. In Tulsa most suppliers call it crusher run and size it by the largest stone, so the one you probably want is 1 1/2 inch crusher run at $385 a load delivered. Order it by either name and you will get the same material.
What is the difference between crusher run and clean gravel?
Crusher run, also called crush and run, has stone dust and fines mixed in with the rock, so it packs down hard into a surface you can drive on. Clean gravel is washed rock with no fines, so it stays loose and drains. Driveways want crusher run. French drains and drainage work want clean rock like ASTM #57.
How much gravel do I need for my driveway?
One truckload is roughly 14 to 16 tons and covers about 700 to 900 square feet at four inches deep. A typical 12 by 60 foot residential driveway is around 720 square feet, so one load usually covers it. What gravel is cheapest for a driveway?

Do you spread the gravel?
No. We dump the load in a pile where you point us, and that is it. Spreading and grading are a different trade with different equipment. Make sure a loaded truck can back in, and have your spreading plan ready for after we pull away.
