DIRT CALCULATOR:
FILL DIRT IN YARDS, TONS & LOADS

Put in the length and width in feet and the depth in inches. The calculator turns that into cubic yards, then tons, then the number of Blue Sands truck loads at 14 to 16 tons a load, with a delivered price. It opens on unscreened pad and fill dirt. A full load of unscreened fill dirt is $320 delivered in Tulsa County, sales tax extra. Outside Tulsa County, add $50 a load.

HOW TO MEASURE

Three numbers and a tape measure. Nothing needs to be exact to the inch.

  1. Length and width, in feet. Run a tape down the long side and across the short side. If the area is an L or an odd shape, break it into rectangles, run each one through the calculator, and add them up.
  2. Depth, in inches. For a low spot or a hole, measure from the height you want to end up at down to the ground today. Dirt settles, so a little extra on top is normal.
  3. Round up to whole loads. The calculator rounds the load count up to full trucks. If you land between sizes, order a little extra. Running short means waiting on a second delivery.

Typical depths, the same ones on the calculator buttons: 2 inches to top up a driveway that already has rock, 3 inches for beds, 4 inches for a new driveway, and 6 inches for a building pad.

The math, if you want to check it by hand: length times width in feet, times depth in inches divided by 12, gives cubic feet. Divide by 27 for cubic yards. Multiply cubic yards by about 1.05 for tons of fill dirt. A full load of 14 to 16 tons works out to roughly 13 to 15 cubic yards.

DIRT CALCULATOR QUESTIONS

How many cubic yards of fill dirt are in a truck load?

Roughly 13 to 15 cubic yards. A load is 14 to 16 tons, and the calculator figures fill dirt at about 1.05 tons per cubic yard.

How many tons of fill dirt do I need?

Multiply the cubic yards by about 1.05. Filling a 20 by 20 foot low area 6 inches deep takes about 7.4 cubic yards, close to 8 tons, which is one load.

What depth should I use for fill dirt?

The depth of the low spot you are filling. If it is uneven, measure a few spots and use the average. A building pad is often 6 inches or more.

How accurate is the calculator?

It gets you close, and it is still an estimate. Ground is rarely flat, dirt settles after it is placed, and every load crosses a scale, so the final tonnage and price come off the scale ticket and are confirmed on your quote. Prices include delivery; sales tax is extra.
